THE FEAST OF ST GEORGE AT BOROUGH MARKET
Sunday 23 April
12pm-4pm at Borough Market, 8 Southwark Street; free
As patron saint of farmers, shepherds and butchers as well
as England, St George is well suited to being celebrated at
Borough Market. This festival of food, music, cookery
demonstrations and fusion of entertainment will also involve
a visit from some of the market's Catalonian friends,
marking the fact that St George is also patron saint of that
region. The market will be filled with the sounds and smells
of both cultures as Borough Market traders celebrate with
specialities including swords of cheese, George and the
dragon biscuits, English mead and Catalan seafood fideua.
There will be free cookery demonstrations throughout the
day, a family-friendly performance of George and the Dragon
from theatre company 'The Lions part' plus Folk Dance
Remixed will be bringing their unique fusion of folk and
hiphop dance for a modern take on the traditional may-pole
dancing. The exchanging of roses and books as a sign of
appreciation is something of a Catalan custom and roses will
be handed out to revellers throughout the day.

ST GEORGE: A SAINT FOR ALL
Sunday 23 April
4.30pm at Church of the Precious Blood,  O'Meara Street;

St George is patron saint of many countries, regions and
cities as well as groups of people such as horsemen, farmers
and soldiers. The St George in Southwark Festival celebrates
him as a multi cultural patron saint for the many diverse
communities in the borough, bringing people together in a
variety of plays and processions, reminding us of the rich
heritage of both St George and our area. Sam Riches has
researched widely and written about St George and the
traditions associated with him from Manchester to Turkey,
from Estonia to Ethiopia. She has been a regular visitor to
the St George in Southwark Festival.
