A ROYAL RIVER SALUTE
Wednesday 9 September
12pm-12.30pm on River Thames (Tower Bridge to Westminster)
At midday a flotilla of historic vessels, leisure cruisers
and passenger boats will take part in a procession on the
River Thames to mark the day on which Queen Elizabeth II
becomes the longest reigning monarch in British history.
This date will mark the 63 years and 216 days since The
Queen came to the throne. The procession will feature
vessels such as Havengore and Gloriana, which participated
in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee River Pageant in 2012, as
well as the fireboat, Massey Shaw. It will begin east of
Tower Bridge at midday, with the vessels sounding their
horns for one minute. Tower Bridge will be raised in salute
and as the procession passes by HMS Belfast, a four gun
salute will sound and Massey Shaw will shoot jets of water
into the air. The procession will end approximately 30
minutes later outside the Houses of Parliament with a final
fanfare and 'three cheers'.

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF ST THOMAS' HOSPITAL
Thursday 10 September
12.30pm at St Thomas' Hospital Garden, Westminster Bridge
Road
Part of St Thomas' Hospital was destroyed in an air raid on
9 September 1940. St Thomas' will mark the 75th anniversary
with a short service in the hospital garden (opposite the
Houses of Parliament). All welcome.

SOUTH BANK FORUM

Regular meeting for South Bank and Waterloo residents
convened by Kate Hoey MP, Neil Coyle MP and councillors from
Bishop's ward (Lambeth) and Cathedrals ward (Southwark).
Agenda includes construction updates on the Shell Centre
(Southbank Place) and the Garden Bridge. There will also be
a presentation on proposed improvements to Westminster
Bridge Road and adjacent streets, plus an update from the
Jubilee Gardens Trust.

BACH TO BABY: I GOT RHYTHM

Bach to Baby is brought to you by award-winning concert
pianist and local mum Miaomiao Yu. The idea is simply to
bring adults and kids of all ages together for a lively
morning of music. Suitable for both under 5s and under 95s.
This month - I Got Rhythm, featuring Annabelle Lawson, piano
From courtly dances of the eighteenth century, through the
tangos and waltzes of the European ballroom, to ragtime,
Broadway and the sounds of South America - rhythm is music's
most universal driving force. Performed by acclaimed British
concert pianist Annabelle Lawson.

BUILDINGS PLANTLIKE GREW... A WALK AROUND SE1
Friday 11 September
Meet 6.30pm outside Kennington Underground Station; RSVP to
[email protected].
Over the past few months Different Skies writers collective
and publication has been haunting the streets of SE1 and
surrounds - from Vauxhall, to Kennington, to Elephant &
Castle - documenting in photographs and poems a trail of
demolition, displacement, and precarious alternatives to
London's housing crisis. The project, supported by The
Poetry School, culminates in a series of postcards to be
released shortly. To celebrate, Different Skies is hosting a
sunset walking tour with poets, community activists,
historians, bloggers and musicians. We'll be visiting
Different Skies' former HQ, Erlang House at St George's
Circus, the ruins of the Heygate Estate, and the beautiful
community gardens of Bonnington Square. A roaming discussion
featuring presentations and readings from: John Boughton,
author Municipal Dreams blog, James Hatts, editor of SE1
website, Mary van der Water from Save Knight's Walk
campaign, Silvia Rothlisberger from  Latin Elephant and
Richard Reynolds, aka the Guerilla Gardener.

THE SACRED RIVER: TOTALLY THAMES FESTIVAL ORGAN RECITAL

A dimly lit and atmospheric evening organ recital given by
cathedral organ scholar Alexander Binns, featuring a
commission by the young composer Lloyd Coleman.

GREAT RIVER RACE
Saturday 12 September
Competitors will pass Tower Bridge approx 11.10am-12.35pm
Annual 22-mile race on the Thames from Docklands to Ham in
Surrey featuring approximately 300 craft. Any
traditional-style, coxed boat, propelled by a minimum of
four oars or paddles, without sliding seats or riggers, may
take part. Each boat is computer-handicapped according to
its potential performance, so everyone has an equal chance
in this 'slowest away first, fastest last' handicap race.
Every year brings a new and unusual boat to test the
handicappers. There will be disruption to Thames Clippers
boat services whilst the race is under way.

SAF SUMMER ARTS FAIR

by the Southwark Arts Forum.

VIET NAM DISCOVERY FESTIVAL
Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 September
Sat 1pm-8pm; Sun 11am-6pm at Potters Fields Park,  Tooley

A vibrant celebration of Vietnamese culture, cuisine and
crafts. Organised by the Embassy of Viet Nam and sponsored
by national carrier Vietnam Airlines, Quang Ninh Province
and Thien Minh Group,. The festival will open with music and
dance performance and will feature food stalls and art
displays.
