8pm at The Old King's Head, Kings Head Yard, 45-49 Borough
High Street; 3 (conc 1.50); reservations
[email protected]
A South East London Folklore Society event. Lewis Carroll,
creator of Alice in Wonderland, was fascinated by the
occult, magic and ghosts, and was a very early member of the
Society for Psychical Research. Biographer Jenny Woolf
delves into this tangled web of Victorian creepiness,
examines some of the weirder things that Carroll wrote and
read, considers possible medical reasons for the experiences
he might have had, and casts light on the endless battle
that raged in his own mind between religion, logic and the
world of the unreal.

BLESSING OF THE RIVER THAMES
Sunday 11 January
12.30pm at London Bridge
The clergy and congregations of Southwark Cathedral and the
church of St Magnus the Martyr, whose parish boundaries meet
on London Bridge, process to the centre for a short service.
This Thames tradition follows the Orthodox custom of hurling
a cross into water as a symbol of Christ's baptism which is
celebrated on the Sunday after the Epiphany. The annual
London Bridge event, which draws on ancient customs, was
established 11 years ago at the initiative of Fr Philip
Warner, parish priest at St Magnus.
