SOUTHWARK MYSTERIES WALK

7pm (meet 6.45pm) at Tabard Street piazza; 8 (+ booking
fee) in advance; 10 on day subject to availability
John Constable, author of The Southwark Mysteries and Secret
Bankside - Walks In The Outlaw Borough brings history
vividly to life, transforming our perception of the oldest -
and wildest! - part of London. This walk explores the sites
of the Clink and Marshalsea prisons, The Tabard Inn, St Mary
Overie dock, Winchester Palace, Bankside's theatres,
bear-pits and 'stews', and Cross Bones, the outcasts' burial
ground. John leads us deep into the secret history of the
Outlaw Borough, weaving the stranger-than-fiction stories of
these sites with the poems they inspired. The walk offers a
fascinating insight into Bankside and Borough through the
eyes of a local writer.

ZEPPELIN NIGHTS: LONDON IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Tuesday 23 September
7pm-8.30pm at Waterloo Library, 114-118 Lower Marsh; free
Talk by Jerry White. "London at War" conjures up the Blitz
of 1940-41 rather than the First World War, yet, from day
one on 4 August 1914, London was given over to the machinery
of total war. Its strategy was conducted from Whitehall,
hundreds of thousands of men from Britain and overseas
passed through its railway stations, their wounded were
nursed in its hospitals, and Londoners endured aerial
bombing from Zeppelins and giant biplanes. The war impacted
on London and Londoners in ways that changed them for ever.
Jerry White is professor of history at Birkbeck, University
of London and an award-winning social historian. Part of the
month-long Lambeth Heritage Festival.
