TINO SEHGAL WORKSHOPS AT TATE MODERN
Sunday 4 & Monday 5 March
4pm-9pm each day at Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, Bankside; to
take part or for further information contact
[email protected]
Tate Modern is offering local residents and workers the
opportunity to participate in workshops with the artist Tino
Sehgal, which will take place in the Turbine Hall out of the
normal museum opening hours. During these workshops, Sehgal
will explore ideas behind his practice with the group. The
workshop activities will include game-like conversational
and movement exercises, as well as the opportunity to
experiment and create your own exercises. Those of all ages
and experience are welcome, participation is free.
Refreshments will be provided. Sehgal is a British-born,
Berlin-based artist trained in economics and dance in
Germany whose work has been presented at ICA London, Tate
Modern, and recently in a major exhibition at the Guggenheim
Museum in New York. In his work Sehgal constructs situations
that defy the traditional context of museum and gallery
environments, focusing on the fleeting gestures and social
subtleties of lived experience rather than on material
objects. Relying exclusively on the human voice, bodily
movement, and social interaction, Sehgal's works
nevertheless fulfil the parameters of a traditional artwork:
they are presented continuously during the operating hours
of the museum, they can be bought and sold, and, by virtue
of being repeatable, they can persist over time. In 2012,
Sehgal will undertake the commission for the Unilever Series
in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern.
