SOUTHWARK MYSTERIES WALK: LONDINIUM
Monday 6 September
Meet 6.45pm for 7pm  at Tabard Street piazza by St George
the Martyr; free
First of a series of three free guided walks around the
oldest and wildest part of London with John Constable,
author of Secret Bankside - Walks In The Outlaw Borough and
The Southwark Mysteries, the epic play recently performed in
Southwark Cathedral. Southwark's first thousand years. Roman
roads and shopping-arcades, a female gladiator, temples to
Mars and Isis, the legend of Mary Overie and how St Olaf
once demolished London Bridge.

DR BIKE WINTER WHEELIN' EVENT IN WATERLOO
Tuesday 7 September
5.30pm-7.30pm outside James Clerk Maxwell Building, 57
Waterloo Road; free
A Winter Wheelin'-themed Dr Bike event in the plaza outside
KCL's James Clerk Maxwell Building. Bring your bike to get a
free bike check - brakes, gears and tyres. The sustainable
transport team will also be on hand to provide advice on
cycling in and around Lambeth.

WATERLOO LIBRARY BOOK GROUP

6.30pm-8pm  at Waterloo Library, 114-118 Lower Marsh; free
The book group at Waterloo Library meets on the second
Thursday of each month. The library buys 15 copies of each
title chosen. The titles range from contemporary
bestsellers, to award-winners and the occasional classic.
New members always welcome. Attending the group is free but
there is a small charge for refreshments (wine and crisps)
for those who want them. This month the group is discussing
Black Mamba Boy by Nadifa Mohamed. Contact librarian Stephen

THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR IN LONDON
Thursday 9 September
8pm at The Old King's Head, Kings Head Yard, 45-49 Borough

Robert Stephenson's illustrated talk will discuss places in
London that were either occupied, owned or had some
connection with the Knights Templar and their dramatic
downfall, including the sites of their imprisonment and
interrogation. Robert Stephenson is the chairman and lecture
organiser of RILKO - the Research Into Lost Knowledge
Organisation. A South East London Folklore Society event.

THE POLISH ART FESTIVAL
Thursday 9 to Saturday 11 September
Thu from 7pm; Fri & Sat 1pm till late at The Crypt, St
George the Martyr, Borough High Street; free; 
Nowy Cazas presents painting, photography, sculpture, poetry
and live music from Poland. The festival, since its
inaugural event a year ago has been promoting cultural
exchange and stimulating a social dialogue between a new
generation of Polish artists, musicians, writers and
intellectuals from different regions of Poland, now united
in London.

THE MAYOR'S THAMES FESTIVAL

THE HISTORY OF BERMONDSEY ABBEY

Local historian Stephen Humphrey has organised this
afternoon meeting as part of the celebrations of the 1100th
anniversary of Bermondsey Abbey's mother house at Cluny in
eastern France. 11 September is the actual anniversary of
Cluny's foundation in 910. Talks will be given on the
history and excavations of the abbey and tea will be served.
There are also plans for a commemorative plaque in
Bermondsey Square.

LONDON BRIDGE & THE CITY OF LONDON IN THE NIGHT BLITZ

Meet 2pm at south churchyard at Southwark Cathedral,  London

Neil Bright leads a walk across London Bridge along to the
Bank of England then to St Paul's Cathedral, back across
Blackfriars Bridge and finishing at Southwark Station
recalling the terrible events of the Night Blitz of 1940/41
on both sides of the river.
