ANDREW MOTION & TERRY JONES AT SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL FOR JOHN GOWER CHORAL EVENSONG Monday 14 July 5.30pm at Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge To mark the 600th anniversary of the death of John Gower there will be a special service of Choral Evensong sung by the Girls and Gentlemen of the Cathedral Choir. Prayers will be said at Gower's tomb in the nave of the Cathedral. The service will be followed by readings of work by Gower, and others, in the presence of Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate, and Terry Jones (formerly of Monty Python). John Gower, an early poet laureate and a friend of Chaucer, lived with the monks at what is now Southwark Cathedral. The parade, or "rush out" is characterised by colourful costumes and a rhythmic blending of goatskin drums, cow bells, horns fill the air as the Junkanoo groups, comprising sometimes dozens of even hundreds of members, compete for not just the kudos of winning but also a cash prize to help fund its costumes for the following year.
