Map: http://quicklink.se1direct.co.uk/?id=1024
Join local legend Harry Bailey, landlord of the Tabard
Inn Southwark, and a motley collection of pilgrims as
they wend their way through Kent en-route to Canterbury
Cathedral. Along the way, each pilgrim is invited to
compete in a story telling competition. The pilgrim
with the best tale will win a slap up meal at the
Tabard when the pilgrimage returns to Southwark. Join,
amongst others, the lusty Wife of Bath, the prim
Prioress, the flatulent Cook and the heroic Knight, as
they tell their famous, irreverent, magical, bawdy
tales along the route. Chaucer's epic poem is brought
to life in a vibrant modern adaptation that places the
tales on the streets the pilgrims trod. Starting
outside the George Inn on Borough High Street,
Southwark Playhouse will take you along the Pilgrims
Way via the back streets parks and famous sites of
Borough, culminating outside Southwark Cathedral.

CENTENARY DAY OF CELEBRATION AT SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL
Sunday 3 July
12.30pm-6.30pm at Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge'
free
Map: http://quicklink.se1direct.co.uk/?id=874
Sunday is Southwark Cathedral's 100th birthday which
will be celebrated all day indoors and outdoors.
It will be exactly a hundred years to the day since
Edward VII and Queen Alexander came to Southwark's
ancient priory church to witness it becoming the new
Diocese of Southwark's cathedral. The party begins at
12.30pm following the Sunday morning Choral Eucharist
which will be broadcast on giant outdoor screens.
Activities include face painting, puppet show, circus
acts and a sword fighting demonstration by the Globe
Theatre. Borough Market's stallholders will be selling
food and there will be a Victorian merry-go-round and a
jazz band. Guests include a rare appearance by
Southwark's Peary King and Queen in costume.
At 3pm the Centenary Service of Celebration, sung by
the Great Choir of Southwark, the winning entry of the
Centenary Music Composition Competition will have its
first liturgical performance.
Afterwards a hundred white doves are due to be released
from the Millennium Courtyard to represent each of the
years since 1905.
The day concludes at 6.30pm with a Solemn Eucharist
sung by the girls and men of the Cathedral Choir.
