Our pick of this week's community and cultural events:

BANKSIDE INFORMATION DAY
Friday 5 September 
11am-6pm in Southwark Cathedral Churchyard
This annual event is organised by Southwark Council to
showcase regeneration and community projects across the
north of the borough. Highlights include:

* A special seminar with speakers from the LDA, GLA and
Southwark Council to discuss the future of tourism in
Bankside. 

* Historical tours of the area by local poet John
Constable. The first leaves at 11am taking in the
Tabard Inn, Borough Market, St Mary Overie Dock,
Winchester Palace, Clink Street, and the Crossbones
Graveyard, and the second, starting at 2pm, will lead
visitors round Dickens' Borough.

* Cheap, locally produced food from the Bengali Women's
Group and live jazz music.

Over 50 projects and organisations will be exhibiting
at this year's fair ranging from large-scale property
developments through to community projects delivering
social and economic regeneration schemes:

* Developers from More London, the Hopton Street
development and the Elephant and Castle will be on hand
to answer questions. 

* Council officers will be providing information about
new initiatives such as the Street Action Team,
Community Councils and Wardens.

* Bankside Open Space Trust will be giving away free
packets of herb seeds for visitors to take home or
plant in the newly developed Mint Street Park 

* Community Recycling Project, CRISP, will be selling
their innovative composting bins.


DAVID BLAINE: ABOVE THE BELOW - POTTERS FIELDS
Friday 5 September
8pm on Sky One and at Potters Fields SE1
Magician David Blaine is to be suspended from a crane
in a perspex box at Potters Fields near Tower Bridge
without food for 44 days for his next feat of
endurance. He will live in a box just seven feet by
seven feet deep by three feet. Sky One will show
continuous coverage of the event on its interactive
service (press red on Digital Satellite), while Channel
4 will provide a live stream on its website for
4Broadband subscribers. Channel 4 is showing the
footage on Monday 8 September at 10pm.

OYSTER & SEAFOOD FAIR AT HAY'S GALLERIA
Friday 5 to Sunday 7 September
11am-7pm (Sun -7pm) at Hay's Galleria, Tooley Street
Annual festival of fish with fresh samples and live
entertainment.  The fair also offers the opportunity to
learn how to prepare the ultimate fish dish at home,
with demonstrations by experts from the National
Federation of Fishmongers and The Seafish Industry
Authority. Throughout the three-day event there will be
live entertainment including music from a Caribbean
steel band, balloon modelling, stilt walking, juggling,
plate spinning and face painting.

GREAT RIVER RACE
Saturday 6 September
Over 150 river craft, including gigs, skiffs, shallops,
whalers and even Chinese dragon boats, sail downstream
from Richmond to Docklands. First craft due at Lambeth
Bridge about 1.40pm.

SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL PATRONAL FESTIVAL
Sunday 7 September
11am at Southwark Cathedral
Choral Eucharist for Our Lady's Birthday. The
cathedral, being dedicated to  Mary, today celebrates
its festival with a Choral Eucharist. A celebratory
champagne breakfast will be served in the Refectory
from 9.45am - between the 9am said Eucharist and the
11am Choral Eucharist.

RICHARD II FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE ON BBC FOUR
Sunday 7 September 
7pm on BBC Four (Freeview, satellite & cable)
The first ever live televised production from
Shakespeare's Globe on Bankside. Starring Mark Rylance
and directed by Tim Carroll, this all-male
interpretation aims to replicate the authentic
Shakespearean experience as accurately as possible. 
The evening is presented by Andrew Marr who is joined
by Corin Redgrave, Zoe Wanamaker and Michael Wood to
discuss all aspects of the production.
The performance will be enhanced by pressing the red
key on your digital handset.  During the play you can
explore a specially produced interactive theatre
programme for Richard II giving information about the
actors, the characters they play and behind the scenes
facts. 
By pressing the red button you see real-time text
commentary by Variety theatre critic Matt Woolf. He
traces the play's historical significance, assesses
this version and why the production is a timely
exploration of regime change.
