[ What's on this week ]

Each week we highlight a selection of community and
cultural events:

WATERLOO TIME BANK TO BE LAUNCHED
Monday 18 November
5.30pm at St John's Church, Waterloo Road
SE1-based think tank the New Economics Foundation will
launch the Waterloo Time Bank, a mutual volunteering
project which is working to develop and strengthen
community participation in the SE1 area. Time Banking
is a tool that focuses on peoples skills. A paid broker
links people up matching people's skills with people
that need the skill. Every hour a time bank participant
spends helping another participant they earn a time
credit. Already at the Waterloo Time Bank one
participant has earned time credits by playing the
piano at a sing-song at sheltered accommodation in
Waterloo, another spent her time credits on help with
her English, and someone else is earning time credits
by helping pensioners with their gardens. Already over
70 hours have been exchanged. That's 70 hours of people
spending time together, sharing skills and building
community.
Watch this space for more details on how you can get
involved.

Due to a diary mix-up, Tariq Ali has again had to
postpone his talk (as listed for 21 November in 'in
SE1') at the Calder Bookshop (he will be speaking in
Madrid). Patrick Cockburn is currently based in
Jerusalem - writing for The Independent - and he was
one of the few Western journalists to remain in Baghdad
during the Gulf War. Originally published in 2000, he
has just launched a revised paperback edition of his
book Saddam Hussein: An American Obsession (written
together with Andrew Cockburn) - which makes chillingly
clear just how terrible the price of the 1991 Gulf War
has been for Iraqis.
