OLD SOUTHWARK IN THE BLITZ: THEN AND NOW
Tuesday 15 March
6.30pm-7.30pm  at John Harvard Library, 211 Borough High
Street; free
During the Second World War, London and its citizens were,
at times, under daily and nightly attack from the Luftwaffe.
For the most part Londoners calmly carried on with their
daily lives despite the threat of their homes being
destroyed and the real possibility of being killed, injured,
or trapped under the rubble of one's own home or workplace.
Through images and stories from the dark days of 1939 to
1945, Second World War researcher and author, Neil Bright
will take you on a virtual guided tour of Old Southwark in
the Blitz. Looking at incidents and evidence of bombing
raids in the borough supported by personal accounts and
stories of bravery.

THE PEOPLE'S BUREAU SKILLS EXCHANGE
Wednesday 16 March
11am-4pm  at Upper Level, Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre,
Elephant and Castle; free
The People's Bureau is a project based in a market barrow at
Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, led by artists Eva
Sajovic and Rebecca Davies. The project's aim is to create a
pool of collective local knowledge through exchange, a
supporting network of different skills and to draw attention
to diversity and existence of different economies in the
Elephant & Castle. This session includes egg decoration,
bunting marking, drawing from live and poetry reading.

JAMIE OLIVER'S FIFTEEN APPRENTICE CHALLENGE
Friday 18 March
11am-3pm  at Floral Hall, Borough Market, 8 Southwark Street
Apprentice chefs from Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant,
Lexington catering college and KPMG become market traders
for the day. As part of National Apprentice Week Borough
Market will play host to Fifteen's apprentice challenge
finale, where after having three days to plan, prepare and
design a street food dish, the apprentices will come to
Borough Market to sell their dish to the public. Working in
teams the apprentices will source their ingredients from the
wealth of traders within the Market and will even have to
pass a Borough Market food tasting panel, something which
all traders who join the Market undertake, before being
allowed to sell their food. Split into teams, the apprentice
chefs will man a stall selling their food to the hungry
public. Starting their day at the market at 11am when they
ring the bell to start the day's trading, they will then
have until 2.45pm on their stalls to sell as much as they
can. The winners will be the team that generates the most
profit.

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: MEMORY AND PLACE, PUBLIC PERFORMANCE

As Elephant & Castle undergoes a period of significant
redevelopment, Siobhan Davies Dance, Entelechy Arts and The
People's Bureau are working together with day centres and
community groups in Southwark to collate memories and
stories from local residents. Performed by the participants,
the durational performance in Elephant & Castle Shopping
Centre will showcase their collected stories and memories.

CROSSBONES WARDENS - VOLUNTEER INDUCTION SESSION

Crossbones Garden in Redcross Way was boarded up and closed
to general public for many years. Behind the hoardings is a
post-medieval, unconsecrated paupers' burial ground with the
remains of an estimated 15,000 people buried there. Since
January 2015 Bankside Open Spaces Trust has been working
with the Friends of Crossbones to create a public garden
there. The site has great local and London-wide significance
as a non-denominational, non-judgemental place where the
'outcast dead' can be remembered. Crossbones is opened
thanks to the generosity of Volunteer Wardens who give their
time to supervise the garden while it is open to the public.
Crossbones Volunteer Wardens are responsible for opening the
garden to the general public and being a constant, welcoming
and informational presence during the opening hours. A
detailed knowledge of the site is not required. BOST is
recruiting more volunteers to help at the garden,
particularly at the weekends. The next training session will
be run on Saturday 19 March for new wardens, which will
include an introduction to the space by John Constable. If
you are interested in becoming a Crossbones Volunteer Warden
please email [email protected] or call 020 7403 3393 for more
information and to book your place on the induction on 19
March. Please note that places on the training are limited
but more sessions are intended throughout 2016.

DR BIKE

Cycle Confident will be at the museum hosting a free Dr Bike
service and cycle training taster sessions. Drop in and get
your bike checked over by the experts. Qualified instructors
will be on hand to take you for a short spin and give you a
taste of what to expect if you book a free one-to-one cycle
training session.

Crossbones Garden will be part of the Find Your London
festival with a special programme of events on the Saturday

Goosewing entrance, who will be in residence over the
weekend to talk about his craft and installation in the
garden.
