THE OPTIMISTS OF NINE ELMS: COMMUNITY FILM CLUB
Monday 3 March
7pm (refreshments from 6.30pm) at Starr Auditorium, Tate
Modern, Bankside; free to members
A rare showing of Peter Sellers' 1973 film. Referred to by
Sellers' biographer as a 'masterpiece', 'a cult oddity' and
his 'greatest performance', Sellers plays Sam, a street
musician who dreams of music hall stars and befriends two
slum children. Music credits include Lionel Bart and George
Martin (often referred to as the fifth Beatle). Today Nine
Elms - from Vauxhall to the revamped Battersea Power
Station, is one large development site that will include a
relocated US embassy and a Frank Gehry building. The film
provides a breathtaking insight into what the riverside
boroughs looked like 40 years ago. To join the Community
Film Club, email [email protected] or call 020
7401 5176. Membership is open to those living in Southwark
and Lambeth.

THE BIG SWAP
Tuesday 4 March
12pm-2pm at Memorial Park, Guy's Hospital, off Great Maze
Pond; free
If you can't quite bring yourself to take that
slightly-too-small jumper to the charity shop but you're too
lazy for eBay then gather the clothes, books and DVDs you're
bored with and swap them for (nearly) new things at The Big
Swap. Not only will you be refreshing your wardrobe and
saving your old things from landfill, you'll be reducing the
use of new materials, picking up a bargain (free stuff!),
finding a new read or doing some re-gifting. The more you
bring to swap the more items you can pick up. Donations are
also welcome which will be passed on to local charity
Foundation 66. The swap will take place alongside the weekly
London Bridge Farmers' Market. Forster (49 Southwark Street)
will be accepting swap items between 9am and 6pm
Monday-Friday until Monday 4 March for anyone who'd like to
drop off swap items ahead of time. A Climate Week event.

THE FLIPPING MARVELLOUS SE1 CHARITY PANCAKE RACE
Tuesday 4 March
12.30pm-1.30pm at The Scoop at More London
The Winter Olympics may have come to a close but local
theatre company London Bubble are keeping the sporting

Team London Bridge and London Bubble Theatre initiative in
aid of LB+, a creative training programme for young people.
LB+ uses a theatre-based approach to raise aspirations and
build life skills. Bubble's award winning programme has seen
93 per cent of graduates go on to employment or further
education. Organisations in the SE1 area have been invited
to enter teams of 5 people to hunt, gather and flip their
way around More London in a unique event. A young person
from LB+ will join each team as part of the programme's aim
to develop an innovative model of corporate engagement.
Everyone is welcome to cheer on the teams. To find out more
about the event or to register a team for your company

DIVIDED BY RACE - UNITED IN WAR AND PEACE
Thursday 6 March
6.30pm (refreshments from 6pm) at 160 Tooley Street, 160
Tooley Street; free; booking advised 020 7525 4985 or
[email protected]
The Mayor of Southwark invites you to an evening of film and
discussion. "Divided by race - united in war and peace"
explores the relationship between Caribbean and English
World War Two service men and women against the backdrop of
war. During the Second World War black people from across
the British Empire enthusiastically joined the army, navy,
and Royal Air Force and played their part in fighting Nazi
Germany and its allies. In the air, at sea, and on land they
risked their lives, yet very little attention has been given
to the thousands of black service men and women who
supported the war effort. This hour-long film tries to set
that record straight by documenting the real life
experiences of 13 such unsung heroes. Join the Mayor of
Southwark, Cllr Abdul Mohamed, film maker Marc Wadsworth,
and some of the veterans featured for a free showing
followed by a panel and audience discussion.
