Thursday 27 February
6.30pm at Florence Nightingale Museum, St Thomas' Hospital,
2 Lambeth Palace Road; 8 from
[email protected] or 020 7620 0374
Were passions between women in 19th century Britain doomed
to be thwarted, whether from lack of reciprocity, or because
of societal attitudes that stereotyped romantic friendship
as appropriate, perhaps, for the adolescent girl, but
something that ought to be superseded by marriage? Dr Lesley
Hall, senior archivist at the Wellcome Library will explore
the varied stories of women who loved, and were loved by,
other women during this historical period.

THE OPTIMISTS OF NINE ELMS: COMMUNITY FILM CLUB
Monday 3 March
7pm (refreshments from 6.30pm) at Starr Auditorium, Tate
Modern, Bankside; free to members
A rare showing of Peter Sellers' The Optimists of Nine Elms.
Referred to by Sellers' biographer as a 'masterpiece', 'a
cult oddity' and his 'greatest performance', Sellers plays
Sam, a street musician who dreams of music hall stars and
befriends two slum children. Music credits include Lionel
Bart and George Martin (often referred to as the fifth
Beatle). Today Nine Elms - from the Vauxhall Tower to the
revamped Battersea Power Station, is one large development
site that will include a relocated US embassy and a Frank
Gehry building. The film provides a breath-taking insight
into what the riverside boroughs looked like 40 years ago.
To join the Community Film Club, email
[email protected] or call 020 7401 5176.
Membership is open to those living in Southwark and Lambeth.
