BLACK BRITAIN ON SCREEN

The BFI has a rich collection of films portraying the
African and Caribbean presence in the UK, from early cinema
to recent film and TV. These are freely available for six
days a week at the Mediatheque, a public viewing facility.
Tony Warner of Black History Walks in collaboration with
David Somerset of the BFI Southbank will present a selection
of excerpts from key titles as well as introducing the
groundbreaking and ongoing African Odysseys programme at BFI
Southbank.

THE OUTLAW BOROUGH: GUIDED WALK WITH JOHN CONSTABLE

First of three guided walks with local writer John
Constable, author of The Southwark Mysteries and Secret
Bankside - Walks In The Outlaw Borough. Learn about the
medieval Liberty of The Clink: prisons, taverns, theatres,
bear-pits - and brothels, or 'stews', licensed by the
church.

THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE THEATRE, SHOREDITCH AND HOW IT
COMPARES TO THE ROSE THEATRE

Lecture by Julian Bowsher on new information gained from the
archaeological dig in Shoreditch of The Theatre. Shakespeare
worked there and at the Rose built just ten years after The
Theatre. Julian will explain the exciting new developments
and the look at the two sites' similarities and differences.

AND THE BIRDS FELL FROM THE SKY: CARAVAN THEATRE
Tuesday 11 & Wednesday 12 October
12 noon-4pm at Bankside Mix, Canvey Street; free
This tiny theatre housed in a 1970s vintage caravan plays
host to theatre director Silvia Mercuriali and film director
Simon Wilkinson creating an interactive experience in which
the audience participates in a film using video goggles and
headphones.

SOUTH BANK 'FILMS ON FOOT' WALK WITH THE RAMBLERS
Wednesday 12 October
Meet 7pm at Pimlico Underground Station (Rampayne Street
exit); free
Join the Metropolitan Walkers (20s/30s walking group) for a
four mile film location walk along the South Bank and
Bankside. The walk passes popular filming locations
including the London Eye, Tate Modern and the Millennium
Bridge. Ends at a pub in Borough where a well-known rom com
was filmed. Free walks will be take place every day during
55th BFI London Film Festival (12-27 October). The 16 Films
on Foot walks focus on different areas of London, which have
been stars of the big screen. There is no need to book,
simply turn up at the meeting place indicated below. All of
the walks are free, open to everyone and end at a pub.

LONDON BRIDGE STATION REDEVELOPMENT PRESENTATION
BERMONDSEY COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Network Rail to present proposals for redevelopment of
London Bridge Station followed by questions and a
discussion. Agenda also includes items on the Thorburn
Square Conservation Area and the Page's Walk Conservation
Area.

CHEESE & WINE FESTIVAL ON THE SOUTH BANK
Friday 14 to Sunday 16 October
Fri & Sat 11am-8pm (Sun 11am-6pm) at Southbank Centre
Square,  Belvedere Road
The Cheese & Wine Festival returns to Southbank Centre.
Dozens of cheese and wine related stalls as well as tutored
tastings and demonstrations from renowned experts and
passionate individuals throughout the weekend. The festival
celebrates the relationship between cheese and wine and
provides an opportunity to discover new and traditional
varieties of both. You can expect to learn about traditional
methods of production while also discovering new and
contemporary flavours and brands. This is an opportunity to
get to meet artisan producers and experts in their fields
and share their passion for their products while learning
more about the history, background and processes employed in
creating high quality produce. The Cookery Theatre will be
hosting an array of chef demonstrations and tutored tastings
expertly coordinated by renowned Chef and culinary expert
Valentina Harris. She will be welcoming the likes of
award-winning wine writer Tim Atkin and cheese expert
Patricia Michelson (La Fromagerie) to indulge their passions
and share their knowledge.

LONG LANE GUIDED WALK WITH BERMONDSEY NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM
Saturday 15 October
Meet 10.30am at corner of Long Lane and Great Dover Street
Guided walk along Long Lane to highlight and discuss some of
the issues that will be addressed in the new Bermondsey
Neighbourhood Plan. Anyone is welcome to join - meet at the
corner of Long Lane and Great Dover Street (by St George the
Martyr) at 10.30am. The walk will finish at Tower Bridge
Road/Bermondsey Square.

LONDON BRIDGE AND THE CITY IN THE BLITZ: GUIDED WALK
Sunday 16 October
Meet 11am by the wooden cross in southern churchyard at
Southwark Cathedral,  London Bridge; �8
This walk led by Neil Bright examines the City's great fire
raid of 29 December 1940 and other big raids of 1940/41.
Look at the evidence that still remains, plus the walk is
supported by contemporary photos, eyewitness accounts and
one or two surprising tales. The walk finishes at
Blackfriars Bridge (north side).
