SHAKESPEARE'S BANKSIDE: SECRET HISTORY GUIDED WALK

A journey into the secret history and folklore of London's
oldest Borough with John Constable, author of Secret
Bankside - Walks In The Outlaw Borough. How English theatre

AN EVENING OF BMX FILMS ON THE SOUTH BANK

6pm-8pm in undercroft below Queen Elizabeth Hall, Belvedere

Free open-air event as part of the London Film Festival In
the undercroft (BMX/skate zone) underneath Queen Elizabeth
Hall. With BMX Videos made by young people from South
London, bicycle short films from the BFI Archive, music from
DJ CK Flash and a special screening of JOE KID ON A
STINGRAY, a documentary about the history of BMX.

SPEAK OF ME AS I AM: BLACK HISTORY TALK BY STEPHEN BOURNE

Southwark historian Stephen Bourne will give a presentation
about how he put together Speak of Me As I Am, a Black
history book about Southwark featuring - among others - Ira
Aldridge, Mary Seacole, Dr. Harold Moody, Paul Robeson and
Sam King. He will also discuss his recently completed
documentary Aunt Esther's Story in which he uses family
photographs and archive footage to tell the story of his
aunt, a Black Londoner born before the First World War.

PLANS FOR NEW BFI FILM CENTRE ON HUNGERFORD CAR PARK
WATERLOO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT GROUP GENERAL MEETING
Wednesday 24 October
7pm at Waterloo Action Centre, 14 Baylis Road
Regular public meeting of the group that monitors proposed
developments in Waterloo. Find out about the BFI's proposals
for a new film centre on the Hungerford Car Park site next
to Jubilee Gardens. Postponed from Wednesday 9 October.

Many people have a stake in the Young Vic: the artists the
theatre works with, the audiences, colleagues at other
theatres, local schools, neighbours, public funders - such
as the Arts Council and local borough councils - and private
funders including many foundations and companies. "Find out
who we are, how we chose our repertoire, what our aims are -
and consider how far we succeed. We welcome questions,
advice, criticism as well as ideas and engagements of all

ROCKINGHAM COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

MAKE YOUR OWN BOOK WORKSHOP AT TATE MODERN (for ages 7-10)

2pm-4pm at Tate Modern, Bankside; free (booking required)
Alice Melvin will be running a workshop on making your own
book. Alice is the author and illustrator of AN A-Z TREASURE
HUNT (Tate Publishing �6.99). After guiding you through
making a simple book, Alice will give you ideas for filling
it, from rubber stamps to your own unique illustrations.
Materials will be supplied. The workshop is suitable for
7-10 year olds. Parents are welcome to join in. The event is
FREE but there are a limited number of places.

ONE EYE GREY - OUT OF THE ORBITAL GUIDED WALK

launch of the latest instalment of the One Eye Grey 'penny
dreadful'. Pagan estate agents, buried occult castration
devices and the strange case of the mummified cat are all

An Autumn harvest celebration held annually in Southwark.
Beginning on the Bankside, by Shakespeare's Globe, October
Plenty mixes ancient seasonal customs and theatre with
contemporary festivity, joining with historic Borough
Market, Southwark. October Plenty is a collective
celebration of the seasons, weather and food, in a public
place, with access to everyone. The event is free, and
happens whatever the weather.

The Southwark-based Guy Fox History Project is planning a
big educational project to celebrate Big Ben's birthday in
2008/2009, and is are currently surveying the community
about their experiences, feelings and curiosities about Big
Ben.
1) What does Big Ben SYMBOLISE to YOU?
2) What would you like to know or learn about Big Ben?
The answers will help to develop the educational heritage
project in 2008. They are looking for anything - short
answers, long answers, questions and curiosities.

SOUTH BERMONDSEY STOP SMOKING PROGRAMME 
A free programme to help you quit
Every Thursday from mid October 2007, 12 noon - 5pm, at the 
South Bermondsey Children and Parents Centre, Tenda Road,
SE16 3PN. Call 020 7525 0326 to book an appointment or for
more information.  All workplaces in England including
cafes, pubs, and restaurants are now completely smoke free.
Instead of smoking outside in the cold, we can help you stop
completely. Southwark's community stop smoking advisor will
support you to stop smoking, provide free nicotine 
replacement therapy, and give advice and information.
